Toxic Oil Spills Spread Across Sulaymaniyah: A Growing Environmental Emergency

19/11/2025

In late October 2025, a wave of toxic oil spills began unfolding across Sulaymaniyah Province, starting in Khalakan and quickly spreading to Torba, Piramagrun, Tanjaro, Arbat, Sharazoor, Derbandikhan, and Penjwen. The spills involve hazardous waste from illegal refinery operations—highly poisonous materials dumped directly into valleys, grazing lands, and waterways. These contaminants now threaten Dukan and Darbandikhan reservoirs, the drinking water of over two million people, and the health of wildlife, livestock, and communities. Despite one site receiving partial treatment, most locations remain untouched, and recent rains have worsened the spread. This escalating crisis demands urgent action, accountability, and long-term environmental restoration.

Waterkeepers Iraq-Kurdistan Sounds Alarm on Severe Pollution from Sulaymaniyah to Erbil

16/12/2024

Waterkeepers Iraq-Kurdistan Organization conducted an inspection trip to monitor environmental pollution along the roads from Sulaymaniyah to Kirkuk and from Kirkuk to Erbil. Our key findings are alarming:
We observed severe air pollution from black smoke emissions, particularly from oil refineries in Bazyan and between Kirkuk and Erbil, which are significantly harming air quality. Additionally, numerous unauthorized dumpsites filled with plastic waste and mixed rubbish were found along the route, existing due to a lack of formal waste management systems.
These pollution sources pose long-term risks to the environment and public health. Without intervention, the situation will only worsen.
Urgent action is needed to regulate refinery emissions, establish waste management programs, and raise awareness about illegal dumping. Let's work together to protect our environment and health!

Waterkeepers Iraq - Kurdistan continues its search and inspections and in the continuation of visiting different parts of Kurdistan and the region, we visited the town of Darbandikhan and its surroundings. These areas are severely threatened by environmental and human factors. The town's sewage and garbage are discharged directly into the streams and dams, leading to extreme pollution that impacts humans and all living organisms in the region. A local resident mentioned that he has visited Dewana Dam multiple times for fishing, but all the fish had worms in their stomachs, making them inedible. Additionally, the water is so contaminated that swimming is not an option.

Urgent Action Required: Oil Spillage in The Lesser Zab River

3/4/2024

At Waterkeepers Iraq, we are faced once again with a stark reminder of our ongoing environmental challenges. A recent tragedy struck our cherished Lesser Zab River in Dukan when it became contaminated with oil. As staunch defenders of water integrity in Iraq and Kurdistan, we have tirelessly advocated for the installation of sewage treatment plants in residential areas. These critical infrastructures prevent harmful wastes from contaminating our water sources. However, the absence of such facilities continues to expose not only the Kurdistan Region but all of Iraq to environmental hazards.
