Choman-Rawanduz River Kayak Expedition
Our goal was to lead a kayak expedition down the Choman-Rawanduz River of Kurdistan, Iraq in May of 2014 with a team of professional kayakers, river advocates and a videographer that can develop a film about the expedition. The expedition started on 9 May and completed successfully on 18 May 2014.
Our objectives were to:
Two outreach and educational events occurred near the town of Choman and at Kawlokan Village as well as along the route of the trip. A video of the expedition is being prepared from footage obtained during the trip, which will have multiple uses (promotion of eco-tourism is the primary use but also for use in promoting wild and scenic river protection in Iraq as a whole).
Partners in the expedition were the Halgurd-Sakran Park, Majestic Heights Outdoor Adventures, American Canoe Association, and the Nature Iraq Foundation. Major funding came from Korek Telecom and individual contributors to the Indiegogo fundraising campaign.

- Demonstrate the eco-tourism potential of wild and scenic rivers in Iraq;
- Bring attention to the threats facing the river basin and
- Encourage sustainable use of and protection for Iraqi rivers in general.
