River Festivals

Waterkeepers Iraq has organized Green Music and Arts Festivals with the objective of raising environmental awareness through an entertaining celebration of our environment.   The first festival took place on Earth Day Weekend (April 20th 2012), when Nature Iraq, which had started the Waterkeeper project, and Development Now (a student group of the American University of Iraq-Sulaimani) hosted an arts and music festival in Azadi Park (an outdoor park in central Sulaimani). The Festival promoted conservation and environmental sustainability through drama, music, photography and the arts along with demonstration projects, information booths by local environmental groups, and posters and films on environmental information.

In 2013, the 2nd Green Arts & Music Festival took place also in Azadi Park in Sulaimani, Kurdistan, northern Iraq.  As part of the Choman-Rowanduz River Expedition, a River Festival was also organized by Waterkeepers Iraq to kick off the expedition in the spring of 2014. The next River festival will take place in Choman, Erbil Governorate in the spring of 2020. See the River Murals & Festival Page.
